Biographical Sketch:

Jim Kotoski has been teaching in the Madison Metro. Public School system for 29 years. He has taught biology, IPS physical science, environmental science, and earth science at the high school level and middle school level. He was a professional guide in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico Provincial Park of Minnesota and Ontario, Canada for 23 years. Since 1990 he and his wife have been sailing Lake Superior in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore region. Jim has led environmental science canoe trips into the BWCA with students from Madison Memorial High School and Akira Toki Middle School. He and his wife are presently taking Memorial, Akira Toki Middle, and Spring Harbor students on environmental studies sailing trips in the Apostle Islands. These trips introduce the students into the unique ecosystems, water quality, and history of these stately islands (as well as teaching them to be "ol' salts"). Jim's philosophy and the style of his teaching is "You learn science by being the scientist".
